From a small desert landing strip in 1960, to the world’s busiest international airport, Dubai International (DXB) has come a long way in just short of 60 years.
The busiest month ever recorded at the airport was marked in August 2018 when 8.37 million customers passed through – 1.2 million more than the next closest competitor – setting a new global standard and surpassing the airport’s former record of 8.23 million set in August 2017.
Another enormous milestone was reached at the end of 2018 when DXB welcomed it’s One Billionth customer.
Such growth in a short time frame is astounding. It took the airport 51 years – from September 30, 1960 to December 31, 2011 – to reach its 500 millionth passenger but clocked the remaining 500 million in just seven years.
The numbers continue to grow as new markets, such as China and Russia, show an interest in the world- class tourism and hospitality Dubai offers, however infrastructure constraints and increased competition will mean the growth trajectory will slow. However, the numbers will still be big and the first quarter results of 2019 showed that.
